A New Limit on Intergalactic Magnetic Fields on Subkiloparsec Scales from Fast Radio Bursts

چکیده

Abstract We use the measured scattering timescales of fast radio bursts (FRBs) from CHIME catalog to derive an upper limit on magnetic field subkiloparsec scales in intergalactic medium (IGM). A nonmagnetized, photoionized IGM is insufficient explain turbulent at all redshifts, with a warm-hot component being marginally consistent data z ∼ 1. Accounting for lower envelope temporal smearing distribution nonzero leads limits B < 10–30 nG 0.07–0.20 kpc 1–2. Our work introduces novel technique constrain small-scale fields IGM, regime unexplored by rotation and dispersion measures FRBs.

Probing the Intergalactic Medium with Fast Radio Bursts

The recently discovered fast radio bursts (FRBs), presumably of extra-galactic origin, have the potential to become a powerful probe of the intergalactic medium (IGM). We point out a few such potential applications. We provide expressions for the dispersion measure and rotation measure as a function of redshift, and we discuss the sensitivity of these measures to the He II reionization and the ...

On Associating Fast Radio Bursts with Afterglows

A radio source that faded over 6 days, with a redshift z ≈ 0.5 host, has been identified by Keane et al. (2016) as the transient afterglow to a Fast Radio Burst (FRB 150418). We report followup radio and optical observations of the afterglow candidate, and find a source that is consistent with an active galactic nucleus (AGN). If the afterglow-candidate is nonetheless a prototypical FRB aftergl...

Physical Constraints on Fast Radio Bursts

Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) are isolated, ms radio pulses with dispersion measure (DM) of order 10 pc cm. Galactic candidates for the DM of high latitude bursts detected at GHz frequencies are easily dismissed. DM from bursts emitted in stellar coronas are limited by free-free absorption and those from HII regions are bounded by the nondetection of associated free-free emission at radio wavelength...

Intergalactic Magnetic Fields from Quasar Outflows

Outflows from quasars inevitably pollute the intergalactic medium (IGM) with magnetic fields. The short-lived activity of a quasar leaves behind an expanding magnetized bubble in the IGM. We model the expansion of the remnant quasar bubbles and calculate their distribution as a function of size and magnetic field strength at different redshifts. We generically find that by a redshift z ∼ 3, abo...

Detectability of Pair Echos from Gamma-ray Bursts and Intergalactic Magnetic Fields

High-energy emission from gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) can give rise to pair echos, i.e. delayed inverse Compton emission from secondary e pairs produced in γ − γ interactions with intergalactic background radiation. We investigate the detectability of such emission with modern-day gamma-ray telescopes. The spectra and light curves are calculated for a wide range of parameters, applying the formalis...
